I recently spent my Sunday watching the 1972 classic movie Dharkan. It stars Sanjay Khan and Mumtaz in the lead roles. This film is a typical family drama from that era. I have always liked the chemistry between Sanjay Khan and Mumtaz. They look very good together on screen. You can find more details about the movie on its Wikipedia page.

A Simple But Deep Story

The story of Dharkan is about love and trust. It also looks at how society treats people. Sanjay Khan plays a character who goes through a lot of emotions. Mumtaz is beautiful as always. Her acting feels very natural. I felt that the emotional scenes were handled well. The plot might feel a bit slow for today’s kids. But for someone who loves old cinema, it is a treat.

Comparing with Devendra Goel’s Other Works

The film is directed by Devendra Goel. He was known for making heart-touching family films. I noticed many similarities between this movie and his other hits like Ek Phool Do Mali. Goel had a way of showing family conflicts very simply.

In Ek Phool Do Mali, he focused on the bond between a father and son. In Dharkan, he focuses more on romantic trust. Compared to his film Dus Lakh, this movie is more serious. I think Goel’s strength was making the audience cry and smile at the same time. If you like his style, you should check out our other reviews at hdfolders.com.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the 4K restored version of this film. I must say, the picture quality is a huge upgrade. The colors look very bright and clean. Earlier versions were quite grainy and dark. Now, you can see the details on Mumtaz’s sarees and the sets clearly. The color grading feels warm and fits the 70s mood perfectly.

However, I want to talk about the Hindi dubbing quality. Back in the 70s, actors used to record their lines after filming. This is called “post-sync.” In some scenes of Dharkan, I noticed the lip-sync is a bit off. The words do not always match the mouth movements perfectly.

The audio cleaning in the 4K version is decent. But the Hindi dubbing feels a bit loud in some places. The background music sometimes hides the dialogues. If you are a fan of perfect sound, this might bother you. But for a movie that is 50 years old, it is still okay.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is Dharkan worth a 4K watch? I would say yes, but only if you love Mumtaz. Seeing her in high resolution is a great experience. The scenery and the songs also look very pretty in 4K.

But if you are not a big fan of old dramas, this might be a one-time view. The story is good, but it is not a fast-paced thriller. I enjoyed the 4K version because it felt like watching a new movie. The clarity makes the old Mumbai (then Bombay) locations look very real.

Conclusion

Dharkan (1972) is a solid classic. It has great music by Ravi. The performances are the soul of the movie. While the Hindi dubbing has some sync issues, the 4K visuals make up for it. It is a nice film to watch with your parents on a quiet evening.
