I Am Kalam Review: Gulshan Grover’s Best Hindi Motivational Role

I just finished watching I Am Kalam, and my heart is full. This movie is a small gem that everyone should see. It tells the story of Chhotu, a poor boy working at a roadside dhaba. After hearing a speech by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, he changes his name to Kalam. He dreams of wearing a tie and going to school one day.

Gulshan Grover’s Best Hindi Motivational Role

I have always seen Gulshan Grover as the “Bad Man” of Bollywood. But in this film, he totally surprised me. He plays Bhati, the owner of the dhaba where Chhotu works. He is not a villain here. Instead, he is a kind, fatherly figure.

I think this is Gulshan Grover’s best motivational role. He shows a very soft side. He encourages Chhotu and stands by him. His acting is simple and very real. It made me realize how versatile he is as an actor. He doesn’t need to shout to make an impact. His silent support for the kid is enough to make you smile.

Comparing with Other Nila Madhab Panda Films

The director, Nila Madhab Panda, is known for making movies about social issues. I have seen his other works like Kadvi Hawa and Halkaa. Those films are very good but can feel a bit heavy or sad.

In my opinion, I Am Kalam is his most hopeful work. It does not just show poverty. it shows the power of dreams. While Kadvi Hawa focuses on the harsh reality of climate change, this movie focuses on the magic of childhood. You can read more about his filmography on his official Wikipedia page. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the 4K version of this movie. The visual quality is quite impressive for an indie film. The Rajasthan desert looks beautiful. The colors of the sand and the bright Rajasthani clothes look very sharp. The color grading is natural. It does not look fake or too edited.

However, I have some complaints about the Hindi dubbing. Even though it is a Hindi film, many parts feel like they were dubbed in a studio later. In several scenes, the lip-sync does not match the audio. This is very noticeable in the scenes involving the kids. Sometimes the voice sounds too clean, while the background looks dusty and windy. It breaks the “real” feel of the movie for a second. The audio levels also jump a bit. Sometimes the background music is too loud compared to the dialogues.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? Well, it depends. If you love cinematography and desert landscapes, the 4K version is great. But the movie is driven by its story and emotions. It is not an action film that needs a high-end screen.

I would say it is a perfect one-time watch with your family. It is a movie that stays with you. You might not watch it every month, but you will remember Chhotu’s smile forever. It is a great pick for a weekend afternoon.

Conclusion

I Am Kalam is a beautiful story of friendship and ambition. It shows that your birth does not decide your future. Gulshan Grover is a delight to watch in this positive role. Despite the small dubbing issues, the movie wins because of its pure heart.

My Rating: 4.5/5
