Taxi Driver (1954) Movie Review: Dev Anand’s Timeless Classic

I finally sat down to watch the Taxi Driver (1954) movie recently. It is a true gem from the golden age of Indian cinema. Dev Anand looks incredibly handsome and cool in this film. He plays a rough-and-tough cab driver named Mangal. The movie shows old Bombay in a way that feels very real and raw. I loved the simple yet catchy songs by S.D. Burman. “Jayen To Jayen Kahan” is still stuck in my head. If you love old classics, this film is a treat for the soul.

The Story and Dev Anand’s Charm

The plot is quite simple but keeps you hooked. Mangal is a taxi driver who helps a girl named Mala, played by Kalpana Kartik. She is running away from home. I liked how their relationship grows naturally. Dev Anand doesn’t play a typical hero here. He is a bit moody and grumpy, which makes his character feel human. The chemistry between the lead pair is very sweet. You can tell they were a real-life couple too!

I also enjoyed the supporting cast. Johnny Walker brings his usual humor to the screen. The nightlife of 1950s Bombay is shown with a lot of style. It feels like a “film noir” but with an Indian heart. You can read more about the movie’s history on Wikipedia.

How it Compares to Other Chetan Anand Films

Chetan Anand was a brilliant director. He always tried new things in his movies. If you compare Taxi Driver to his other work like Neecha Nagar, you see a big difference. Neecha Nagar was very social and serious. But Taxi Driver is more of a commercial entertainer.

It still has that artistic touch that Chetan Anand is known for. He uses shadows and light very well. Compared to his later film Haqeeqat, this one is much lighter. But both movies show his great skill in storytelling. If you want to see more reviews of his work, you can check out our other posts on hdfolders.com.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched this movie in a restored 4K format. I must say, the 4K resolution makes a huge difference. The black and white frames look very sharp now. The grey tones are balanced well. The color grading (in terms of contrast) is much better than the old DVDs. You can see the details on Dev Anand’s face and the texture of his taxi.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio. In the 1950s, movies used “sync-sound” less often. Most of the dialogue was dubbed in a studio later. In this restored version, the Hindi dubbing quality is mostly good. However, at some points, the lip-sync feels a bit off.

The background score sometimes hides the dialogues. I felt the audio cleaning could have been a bit better. Some high-pitch sounds still have a bit of a hiss. But for a movie that is 70 years old, it is still very clear. The songs sound great in the new digital format.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

So, should you watch this in 4K? My answer is a big yes. If you are a fan of Dev Anand, you need to see him in high definition. The 4K version brings the old streets of Bombay to life. It is not just a one-time view. It is a movie you can keep in your collection.

The music and the acting make it worth watching again and again. However, if you don’t care about technical details, a standard HD version is also fine. But for the true movie lover, the 4K restoration is a beautiful experience.

Conclusion

Taxi Driver (1954) is a classic that everyone should watch at least once. It has great acting, iconic music, and a deep soul. Dev Anand is at his best here. Even though the dubbing has some minor issues, the overall film is great. It is a beautiful piece of history.

My Rating: 4.5/5

  2. How can an ordinary girl of a village reach Mumbai and the so called music director will recognise her voice which he heard only once. The story is very weak and the life of Gunda Manali type of people is shown as the main theme. Direction is very poor compared to the films directed by Raj Kapoor, (Awara)Guru Dutt (Pyasa)etc. based on similar themes.
